James Bond Island, known locally as Khao Phing Kan, is an iconic destination in Phang Nga Bay, Thailand. It became world-famous as the villain Scaramanga’s hideaway in the James Bond film “The Man with the Golden Gun.”
James Bond Island (Khao Phing Kan) is located in Phang Nga Bay, northeast of Phuket and accessible only by boat. The celebrated islet Ko Tapu (“nail island”) stands just off its shore, characterized by dramatic limestone karsts and emerald-green waters.
By Boat Tour: The only way to visit James Bond Island is on an organized tour. You can depart from Phuket, Krabi, or Phang Nga, with options including speedboats, longtail boats, catamarans, or cruise ships. There are no public ferries—tours are required for access.
Tour Experiences: Most excursions include additional stops at nearby islands, canoeing through sea caves, sightseeing of mangrove forests, and sometimes lunch at a floating village (Koh Panyee). Popular tours offer a mix of sightseeing, swimming, and photo opportunities at various points in Phang Nga Bay.
National Park: The island is part of Ao Phang Nga National Park. Boats aren’t allowed to dock too close; you’ll disembark at a small beach to explore the viewpoints and souvenir stalls.
The best weather is typically during the dry season. Early morning tours generally encounter fewer crowds and offer better photo opportunities.
What You’ll See: Striking limestone cliffs, caves, and the famous vertical rock of Ko Tapu. Expect souvenir stalls and scenic walks on Khao Phing Kan itself.
Getting There: Tour pickups are available from most major hotels in Phuket or nearby regions. Self-drive to a pier and join a local longtail boat if preferred.
Photography: The classic “Bond pose” spot is marked, and local guides often help recreate scenes from the movie.
Crowds: James Bond Island is very popular and can get crowded, particularly in peak season.
